DIY Soap & Body Care

Why take the time to my own natural soap & body care?

Making your own natural soap and body care means you’ll know exactly what ingredients are in them.

Unfortunately, many popular body care products are still made with synthetic ingredients such as:

  • Formaldehyde - linked to weakening the immune system
  • Synthetic Colour – linked to ADHD in children
  • Parabens - linked to breast cancer
  • Chemical Fragrance - can cause skin irritation, migraines and nausea

Cranberry Lane’s 100% natural ingredients will help you create great quality products that are safe for you and your loved ones.

Are your ingredients verified?

Yes, our ingredients are 100% verified and tested for quality. We only source our ingredients from reputable distributors.

Is it difficult to make soap?

Making natural, hand-made soap is not difficult once you understand the basics. You can make a batch of soap in as little as one hour, depending on the formula. We provide a wonderful selection of recipes right on our site and also offer in-store classes.

What are the keys to successful soap making?

Just like baking, following a recipe is always the right answer and will make for a more successful soap making experience.

Always make sure to:

  • Accurately weigh ingredients
  • Use a good formula
  • Apply proper technique

Is there a soap making guide to help me?

We offer an extensive Soap Making Guide on our site that will provide you with all sorts of helpful information.

For accuracy, use our Soap Making Lye Calculator—it allows you to enter the weights of the oils or waxes in your soap formula and will determine the amount of Sodium Hydroxide and Water required.

If you can’t find the answers you are looking for in our soap making guide or on our site, feel free to stop by one of our stores or send us an email with your name and questions. We are here to help!

What if I don’t have time to make my own body care?

No worries! Cranberry Lane offers a full line of ready-to-use body care that is perfect for anyone who wants to enjoy quality body care without all the harmful chemicals.

SAFETY & HEALTH

Is soap making safe?

Yes, soap making is safe if you make sure to carefully follow a formula, acquire the proper equipment, and adhere to safety standards. We do not recommend soap making for children because of the potential danger that lye poses.

What is Lye?

Lye is also known as caustic soda (Sodium Hydroxide), which is key to the soap making process. Use only pure lye granules—do not make the mistake of substituting with drain cleaner, it contains other ingredients that you would not want in your soap. Be sure to keep the lid tight on the bottle of lye as moisture in the air will weaken its strength and cause it to form lumps. Lye can be fatal if swallowed. Carefully read the warning label on the lye bottle.

What else should I know about working with Lye?

  • Always wear rubber gloves and protective clothing, such as a long sleeved shirt and shielding eyewear, when working with lye.
  • Be sure to work in a well-ventilated area. Vapours released from the lye when it is first mixed with water are quite noxious, and can greatly irritate the lungs.
  • Lye can remove paint, so be careful not to let it come in contact with any painted surfaces. If lye, lye/water or even freshly made soap splatters on any painted surface, wash the area quickly with water and detergent. Rinse with clear water and wipe dry.
  • Always have a bottle of vinegar close at hand. Vinegar will help neutralize the lye/water mixture if it happens to splatter on your skin.
  • Do not use any containers made of tin, zinc or aluminum. Lye will react with them. Recommended containers for mixing your soap include glass, plastic, stainless steel, enamel, and heatproof stoneware.

Can I use my soap right away?

Freshly made soap can burn and irritate the skin, therefore it’s best not to handle soap with bare hands for at least 48 hours. If your skin does come into contact with fresh soap, rinse your skin with vinegar immediately, then rinse with running water.

Will there be Lye in my soap?

If you use a proper formula and follow it accurately—once the process is complete, no lye will remain.
